The New Horizons mission has been an outstanding success rewriting what we knew of Pluto. But its mission is far from completed. Swinging past this dwarf planet it headed to an even more distant object, the Kuiper Belt object (486958) 2014 MU69 now referred to as Ultima Thule. So far we only know this object as a single faint point.
Dr Ian Whittaker (NTU) will give us an overview of the New Horizons mission in his talk Ultima Thule - A Step Beyond. He will especially focus upon the encounter with the distant Kuiper Belt object including current images and finding gathered by New Horizons.
Booking is required for this event. While attending, you consent to filming, photography, and sound recording – which may include you as a member of the audience – and its use in publication or advertising distribution, either printed or online, without payment or copyright.
The event will start at 8 pm with Dr Ian Whittaker (NTU) talking about Ultima Thule - A Step Beyond. Refreshments will be offered from 7.45 pm in the CELS foyer. Afterwards, visitors will get a tour of the NTU observatory and the chance to see interesting objects in the winter sky using the observatory's telescopes, small telescopes and binoculars, if the weather allows it.
If the weather is not good, a small planetarium session will be offered in the observatory pointing out objects of interest.
