Falls are a leading cause of mortality and injury in people with Parkinson’s disease (PD) and up to 80% will fall following diagnosis. PD is associated with a range of motor (i.e. gait and balance deficits) and non-motor (i.e. visual and cognitive impairment) symptoms; many of which can adversely affect safe locomotion and influence fall risk. This seminar will provide a brief overview of the factors affecting fall risk in people with PD with a focus on falls that occur during walking, introduce sensory and cognitive mechanisms underpinning gait impairment in people with PD and highlight some of the novel intervention options that are emerging for falls prevention
This seminar is hosted by Professor Mary Nevill
