As part of the School of Science and Technology's Engineering and Materials Research Seminar Series, Dr Mohamed Saad, NTU presents: Materials Nanotechnology for Low-Cost Highly Efficient Photovoltaic (PV) Solar Cell Devices.

Abstract

Currently, the major challenge of the research and development (R&D) in the field of Photovoltaic (PV) renewable energy is to lower the cost per Wp of electricity generation and to improve the conversion efficiency of the solar cell devices.
In comparison with the crystalline silicon, thin film nanotechnology hold the promise of reducing the solar cell cost through lowering the material amounts and energy requirement of the manufacturing process.
Several aspects of the material engineering and thin film nanotechnology for low-cost high-efficient photovoltaic (PV) solar cells will be presented in this talk. The potential advantages of this nanotechnology over the crystalline wafer technology will be discussed.
A basic understanding of the process optimisation, properties, light-management strategy and nanostructures of thin film silicon (Si) solar cells with particular emphasis on amorphous and microcrystalline single, double (tandem) and triple junction silicon solar cells using state-of-the-art techniques e.g. Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapour Deposition (PECVD) will be presented.
