In the 1990s Reuters owned and operated the largest private network in the world, itself spanning multiple private datacenters and customers in the United States, Europe and Asia. The period since then has seen truly seismic changes and events across the information technology realm, from the Y2K bug, through to the dotcom bubble, not to mention the near ubiquitous adoption of high bandwidth internet connectivity. This in turn has driven enormous change in terms of how we do business, keep in touch, share information, and otherwise automate our lives in ways that we could barely conceive. Many of the technology giants that are now household names grew from nothing to become the biggest companies in the world in under a decade.
But how did these companies grow so quickly? Part of the answer is Cloud Computing. Information Technology is a commodity, to the extent that a datacenter is as much a technology risk as it is a technology asset. Why do companies invest in maintaining their own buildings, power, infrastructure, middleware, and software, when there are established IaaS, PaaS and SaaS capabilities available on pay-per-use basis? Cloud computing offers a way for businesses to free themselves from the complexity and cost of technology ownership, and enables them to unleash growth through incredible scale, not to mention a wealth of middleware, software, and services that can be woven into truly compelling products. Elektron Real Time is an established technology and product platform, but all such platforms must evolve to ensure they remain relevant, reliable, secure and cost effective. Elektron Real Time’s shift to cloud is now well underway, and during this lecture we will explore how Elektron has evolved, with particular focus on how cloud is enabling us to reach new customers and optimize our ROI.

Speaker - Stuart Bunyan
Stuart Bunyan leads the architecture team responsible for the design, technology strategy and governance of Refinitiv’s Elektron Real Time platform. His technology career began in 1998 after graduating from the University of Birmingham with a degree in Physics with Astrophysics. After a number of roles in desktop application development, his real time market data career started in 2002 with Gissing Software, a company that specialised in market data platform integration and publication products. Stuart joined Gissing as employee number 11, and was a key member of a small team of technologists who helped the company to deliver its exit strategy when it was acquired by Reuters in 2007. Since then, Stuart has held a number of technology roles within Reuters, later Thomson Reuters, later Refinitiv, becoming Director of Elektron Real Time Architecture in February 2019. Elektron Real Time is a key platform within Refinitiv, noting a universe of over 70,000,000 real time instruments, as well as the 7,000,000 updates per second that traverse the network with an end-to-end target latency of 4 milliseconds. The platform is relied upon by hundreds of thousands of customers around the globe to provide them with the insight they need to make informed trading decisions.
Stuart relocated to Nottinghamshire in 2017 after having spent 19 years living and working in London. Outside of work, Stuart has a young family, and enjoys pretty much all forms of cycling, especially cross-country mountain biking.
