Purpose has become a common term in the context of modern business. With regular talk of ‘purpose driven business’ models being more sustainable and, arguably, increasingly favoured by employees and broader society, we’ll explore what this means to the John Lewis Partnership.
In this Business Leaders Lecture, Rory Campbell will talk about the human side of leading in an organisation founded on principles and enshrined in trust. Sharing lived experiences and business practice, he will address perspectives on:
- Why this has proven so important and so powerful for the business;
- The demanding realities of living up to a purpose, particularly in challenging times for the Retail sector;
- How engaging in and with purpose is brought to life in practice
With a 20 year career, spanning Financial Services, Management Consulting and Retail, he’ll also reflect on personal and career discoveries along the way, the opportunities to lead in organisations with purpose and how to maintain the integrity of personal beliefs in the tide of competitive corporate ambition.
Rory's role in the John Lewis Partnership sits right at the heart of all that makes it a different business. As Partnership Registrar, he focuses on supporting Partners and the Partnership's governing authorities to have and hear clear, informed opinion that influences business leaders. The aim, to ensure the Partnership remains true to its Principles and compassionate to individual Partners.
In practice, this involves providing an independent 'critical friendship' to the Managing Director and Board, strategic advice to senior executives about the implication of business practice on the unique Partnership model, overseeing the democratic vitality of the business and ensuring effective means through which Partners both understand their business (after all they own it) and have a means to voice their opinion and influence of it.
Prior to the John Lewis Partnership, Rory worked in management consulting with global clients focused on helping them to 'realise their purpose', and in financial services where he was a leader in HR and Communications.
Personally, Rory is motivated by purposeful business that serves to have a positive impact on individual lives and society more broadly. He loves meeting new and interesting thinkers from as broad a spectrum as possible. He’s a family man with two young children, through whom he vicariously lives his sporting life!
