Open Dome Event - Albireo the Double Star
Dr D Brown (NTU) will be discussing evidence that casts doubt upon the classic double star Albireo being actually a double star system in his talk Albireo - A Double Star under Suspicion.
- From: Wednesday 22 May 2019, 8 pm
- To: Wednesday 22 May 2019, 10 pm
- Location: CELS, Nottingham Trent University, Clifton Campus, Clifton Lane, Nottingham,
- Booking deadline: Wednesday 22 May 2019, 3.00 pm
Double stars are very common in the Universe. The majority are actually two stars close together that are gravitationally bound. They are especially beautiful to observe, when they show different colours. Albireo in Cygnus is a stunning example of such a jewel in the sky. However, recent observation cast some doubt upon these two stars being actual companions.
In his talk titled Albireo - A Double Star under Suspicion Dr D Brown (NTU) will be presenting astrometry data concerning the double star Albireo gathered by the satellite GAIA. He will make a case that the classic double star might well only be a chance alignment and also indicate what amateur astronomers could observe.
Booking is required for this event. While attending, you consent to filming, photography, and sound recording – which may include you as a member of the audience – and its use in publication or advertising distribution, either printed or online, without payment or copyright.
The event will start at 8 pm with Dr D Brown (NTU) talking about Albireo - A Double Star under Suspicion. Refreshments will be offered from 7.45 pm in the CELS foyer. Afterwards, visitors will get a tour of the NTU observatory and the chance to see interesting objects in the Spring sky using the observatory's telescopes, small telescopes and binoculars, if the weather allows it.
If the weather is not good, a small planetarium session will be offered in the observatory pointing out objects of interest.
