Professor Daniel King Inaugural Lecture
From Devils and Nazi's to alternative forms of organizing. The potential for engaged critical scholarship
Critical scholars have long been accused of being negative, cynical and unable to transform management practice. Whilst they have been able to provide, often compelling, critiques of management practice, faced with the question, ‘well what would you do?’ they have largely been found wanting. As a result, some critical management scholars have gone through what they call a ‘performative turn’, seeking to transform critical scholarship from negative critique as distal judgement to an affirmative engagement with ‘alternative’ practices.
In his inaugural lecture, Professor King narrates his own journey through this question.

Professor King's lecture starts with an account of a change programme in a regional building society he experienced as an undergraduate. Whilst on the surface the change programme appeared to be a success, dig deeper and a world of conflict and tensions existed, where managers presented workers as devils and workers presented managers as Nazi’s. This experienced revealed the contradictions inherent in management work, but raised the question what could he could do differently in practice.
In the lecture, Daniel narrates his various attempts at answering this question, through running a small arts organization, being an active member of protest and anarchist groups, through to experiments in workplace democracy, using unconferencing and sociocracy. These experiences raise questions about management education, theory and practice, the possibilities of alternative forms of organizing and what a critical engaged practice might look like.
Professor Daniel King, Nottingham Trent University
Daniel King is Professor of Organisation Studies at Nottingham Trent University, UK and co-director of the Centre for People, Work and Organisational Practice. Dr King’s research focuses on three main, inter-connected areas: the contribution critical perspectives of management can make to transforming organisational practice; alternative organisations and alternative ways of organising; and critical perspectives of managing in the Third Sector. He has published in Organisation Research Methods, Organisation Studies, Human Relations, Management Learning and Nonprofit Voluntary Sector Quarterly. Daniel reviews many leading journals and is an editorial board member for Work Employment and Society and co-series editor of Organisations and Activism, Bristol University Press. He has recently written an undergraduate textbook Organisational Behaviour 3rd Edition, with Scott Lawley (Oxford University Press).
