Abstract

Simulating large populations of neurons remains a fundamental cornerstone of computational neuroscience. One method of reducing the computational expense is to consider a population density function describing the states of a (sufficiently homogeneous) population of neurons. This aims to be a mesoscopic modelling technique motivated by biophysical, often spiking, single neuron models. In this setting one obtains Chapman-Kolmogorov type PDEs for the density function over the state space of the single neuron model. Often, one takes the Gaussian limit for the random input spikes to the population, leading to a Fokker-Planck equation.

Here, instead, we present a split-operator method which is derived from the characteristics of the ODEs describing the original single neuron model. The noisy inputs can then be handled separately as point processes, allowing us to consider the effect of large spikes and even non-Markov inter-event intervals, increasing the level of biological realism. We hope that these methods may also be applicable to other systems, and describe an extension to the theory of non-Markov queues.
