Abstract
The recent Facebook event ‘Storm area 51 – they can’t stop us all’ managed to attract the interest of over 2 million people. To most the idea of aliens among us is an impossibility but it still is a topic of massive interest to the public. This talk will begin by discussing some of the public interest in aliens, Area51, and current theories before moving onto the techniques used to determine if life is anywhere else in the galaxy.
The first organised search for extra-terrestrial life began in the 1960’s with Project Ozma, organised by Frank Drake, the creator of the Drake equation. Since then the search for extra-terrestrial life has been on many a research agenda. This talk covers some of the methods and results from SETI studies, the way we find exoplanets and potential places suitable for life in the universe. We also have a go at trying to put some numbers into the Drake equation itself.
