As part of the School of Science and Technology's Physics and Astrophysics Research Seminar Series, Susumu Inasawa, Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology presents: Transport, accumulation and packing of particles in drying of colloidal suspensions.

Abstract

Suspended particles finally pack into a particulate film during drying of colloidal suspensions. Because solvent molecules evaporate by simple heating, drying of suspensions or slurries is frequently used to obtain particulate films, especially in industry. Drying-induced solvent flow transports suspended particles to the drying interface and particles are accumulated near the interface. Then particles pack due to further evaporation. Transport of both particles and solvent, and a phase transition of “particles” from suspended to packed are important key factors in drying. We have investigated drying of colloidal suspensions on the basis of these viewpoints.

In this seminar, we introduce several topics from our recent study on drying of suspensions. A clear gravity-driven downward flow owing to the condensation of suspended particles, packing of particles on two dimensional liquid-liquid interface, and optical anisotropy in packed layer of binary colloidal particles will be presented.
