As part of the School of Science and Technology Mathematics Research Centre Seminar Series, Dr Mark Wilkinson, Nottingham Trent University presents: The Maths of Gas.

Abstract

Considering all of life's wonderful natural phenomena, why would one choose to work on the mathematics of gas? Surely such a mundane phase of matter can't offer any mathematicians anything of interest... I will try to convince you in this talk that this is not the case. The study of classical gases has deep connections with group theory, geometry, analysis, as well as the axioms of physics and Hilbert's Sixth Problem. In this talk, we shall reveal the mathematical curiosities which lie in the study of rarefied gases at microscopic, mesoscopic, and planetary length scales.
Although the research in this talk lies in the analysis of partial differential equations, we shall stay away from technicalities, hoping it to be accessible to non-experts.

This seminar is hosted by Dr David Chappell
