As part of the School of Science and Technology's Physics and Astrophysics Research Seminar Series, Shaun Atherton, Loughborough University presents: Challenge Based Learning – A Different Approach to Undergraduate Physics Labs.

Abstract

It is often the case that laboratory activities in undergraduate physics follow a prescriptive set of instructions with specific objectives to fulfil. The student will see physical phenomena in action but may not have input over the design of the experiment. Hence their engagement and understanding of why they are performing a given experiment may suffer. In our approach to the undergraduate physics laboratory we provide more creative control, ownership and freedom to the student with the aim of increasing engagement and understanding while also improving experimental design skills. We hope to develop more confident scientists with skills desired by research and industry. To achieve this we start by providing the students with a hypothesis to test, then allow them to design an experiment that will test this. In the first year of this approach we have learned a lot from this approach. The engagement and confidence of the students appears to be high, while the practicalities of providing such freedom to the students has introduced increased complexity in the organisation and resources of the laboratory. In this presentation we will discuss the experience thus far and how we will build on this foundation for future teaching.
