As part of the School of Science and Technology's Physics and Astrophysics Research Seminar Series, Ian Shuttleworth, Nottingham Trent University presents: STEM-hack: A practical guide to careers in STEM.

Abstract

This discussion-led seminar will focus on the applied aspects of securing a position in STEM, and functioning effectively in that role. The session will invite practical advice from experienced delegates with experience of recruitment into STEM positions who can offer advice and guidance over the purpose of interviews, advice about how to present your abilities and strengths to a STEM-focussed employer and what to expect at an interview.

It is recognised that interviewing skills are essential for career success and will be utilized time and again throughout a person’s lifetime. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that millennials (who make up the largest percentage of the U.S. workforce) will hold a job for less than two years. And any worker over age 25 will hold a job for only about five years. That means that all STEM graduates, regardless of their age, will have several job transitions, and therefore numerous job interviews, throughout their professional careers. This seminar will directly address how to effectively tackle these challenges in an exceptionally challenging job market.

This seminar is hosted by The NTU Astronomy and Physics Society
