Meet and hear from NTU academics, Dr Sarah Pass and Dr Maria Karanika-Murray regarding their research and expertise on the topics of employee wellbeing and engagement. Laura Handley, Head of HR at Ensek will also share how the business has transitioned during this time, and her experience and insights.
Throughout the morning, we would like you to join us for virtual round-table discussions to touch upon themes such as:
- Developing an employee’s sense of purpose in your organisation
- How your SME intends to engage or re-engage workers and reconnect teams
- Fostering healthy wellbeing at work and when working from home
- Reflect on transitioning your business after lockdown
- Discuss anticipated challenges with our academic and experts.

Dr Sarah Pass
Dr Sarah Pass is a Senior Lecturer with over twenty years of teaching experience across undergraduate, postgraduate and executive levels.
In addition to teaching, Sarah is an Ambassador for Engage for Success a not-for-profit movement that was tasked by the UK Government in response to recommendations from the MacLeod Review (2009) around the importance of employee engagement. Sarah is the Chair for the Line Manager Thought and Action Group, Engagement Champions Thought and Action Group, and East Midlands Regional Group. In addition, Sarah is Co-Chair for the Behavioural Science Thought and Action Group with Professor Thorsten Chmura.
Sarah's PhD was sponsored by the EPSRC and focused on employee motivation and high performance work systems, and was completed at Cardiff University. She then went on to do an ESRC Post-Doctoral Fellowship. Sarah has an MSc in HRM, a Diploma in Social Science research methods, and a BA(Hons) in Psychology and Sociology. In addition, she has been awarded a HEA Fellow, an Academic Associate of the CIPD, holds PRINCE2 Foundation and Practitioner status, and holds an ILM in Leadership and Management.
Dr Maria Karanika-Murray
Dr Maria Karanika-Murray is an Associate Professor in the Division of Psychology at Nottingham Trent University. Before joining NTU in 2009, Dr Maria Karanika-Murray was a researcher at the University of Nottingham, where she also completed her PhD.
Maria's research interests include:
- Determinants of workplace health and well-being
- Management of workplace health
- Job design and organisational climate
- Ageing and retirement
- Organisational health interventions
- Intervention evaluation methodology
- Addiction to work
