Event details

Join us online for our next WRAP Live! event with Ashley Hickson-Lovence, whose stunning debut novel The 392 explores a 36-minute bus journey. He'll be in conversation with poet, academic and Nottingham Creative Writing Hub member Dr Becky Cullen.

A former teacher with an interest in inspiring reluctant readers, Ashley is currently writing about Uriah Rennie, the Premier League's first black referee. Becky will be asking about the stops on Ashley’s own writing route, as well as passing questions about black football players and referees, and what happens when you take up your position in the writing area.

As well as Becky and Ashley's conversation, the event includes a special screening of a short animated film produced as a collaboration between the ARHC-funded Crossed Lines project and Compass Collective, a non-profit theatre company working with people seeking sanctuary. Using the motif of voicemail, Creative Writing Hub member Dr Sarah Jackson and the young people worked together to write and perform a series of messages exploring loss, resilience and hope.

We also have a performance from John Lewell, a Year One student on NTU's BA (Hons) Creative Writing course, whose passion for writing is underpinned by wanting to have a solid academic foundation for his craft. He's a keen WRAP (Writing, Reading and Pleasure) participant, taking part in the WRAP programme of book clubs and writing workshops. John joins us to share poems written during the pandemic. When John is a best-selling novelist, you will be able to say you heard him here first!

This event is open to students, staff and the public and co-hosted with Nottingham UNESCO City of Literature and Nottingham Creative Writing Hub.
