Due to the success of our last Nottingham Law School Round Table event we are arranging a follow up session to discuss the new rules around the qualification of solicitors, the role of Qualifying Work Experience, and the implication of these changes for law firms and legal service providers in England and Wales.

As before the discussion will be led by NLS Professors Jane Ching and Jane Jarman, who will be joined by Laura Pinkney, head of the Nottingham Law School Legal Advice Centre.  Jane Ching is a solicitor and Professor of Professional Legal Education at Nottingham Law School, worked on the Legal Education and Training Review and the SRA Work-Based Learning project and has 25 years’ experience in delivering and evaluating lawyers’ pre- and post-qualification education in the UK and elsewhere.  Jane Jarman is a solicitor and Professor of Legal Practice at Nottingham Law School and practised as an insurance and professional indemnity litigator. She has a special interest in the integration of legal education into compliance and risk management frameworks and has advised regulators on legal education and professional compliance in the UK and internationally.

This event will take place online via Microsoft Teams from 4 - 6 pm on Thursday 27 May 2021.

Submit questions

The Round Table will follow up on discussions at our previous event which addressed:

  • What inferences can be drawn from a successful SQE pass?  Does it matter whether the candidate passed either or both parts before, during or at the end of their qualifying work experience?
  • How many different routes to qualification will there be and how many of them will involve exemptions from parts of the SQE?
  • What kind of activity might, or might not, qualify as “qualifying work experience”?  How might employers respond to applicants asking to be credited for QWE carried out elsewhere?  What are the implications for supervisors?
  • What will be the impact of SQE on recruitment cycles and methods?
  • How do the new qualification rules intersect with the SRA Standards and Regulations obligations to maintain a competent workforce?
  • What are the implications of SQE for the long-term development and assessment of learning in the workplace?
