Event details
In this, our third series of Workhouse Lives, brought to you by Nottingham Trent University, the AHRC project ‘In Their Own Write, and The National Archives, we change the focus from inmates themselves to the staff and outsiders who had a hand in their care, containment, punishment and agency. The potential range of these people is considerable, everyone from suppliers and casual visitors doing ‘workhouse tours’ through to masters, matrons and the pauper nurses who attracted so much criticism in the middle years of the New Poor Law.
In this series, a group of speakers with very deep roots in poor law histories deal with the stories of particular groups of workhouse staff and visitors, revealing in the process the extraordinarily complex world of workhouse relations.
