Our Sun seems to be the quite and reliable companion in the sky giving warmth and light to us. However, it is an active star showing many forms of variability. This also includes the recent flurry of Northern Lights observed across the UK. But in what other ways does our Sun impact Earth and are we ever in any danger?
Life on Earth has developed over millennia in the presence of an ever active Sun. Our planet has its own protective shield that gives us protection from most of the Sun's activity. Dr Daniel Brown (NTU) will be exploring in his talk Death by Sun - Impact of Solar Activity on Earth different types of solar activity and their origins. He will then explore how they interact with Earth and cause phenomena beyond the usual Northern Lights. In his talk we will also be introduced to the dangers solar activity can pose especially for our ever growing electronic infrastructure and satellites.
