Second year BA (Hons) Fashion Design student Alexandria Chantiluke has been selected as a finalist for the National Tailoring and Design Awards 2014.

With support from major names in the fashion and apparel industry, Saville Row Training Academy this year introduced the first ever National Tailoring and Design Awards. The Academy challenged design students and graduates across the UK to be creative and innovative while also respecting the traditional and craftsmanship of tailoring. Students were asked to design two outfits for either the menswear, womenswear or unisex markets, with one design having a more traditional focus on quality, fit and detailing, while the other a more conceptual design encouraging students to be experimental and push the parameters of tailoring.

To enter the competition, Alexandria was asked to create a portfolio clearly displaying her research, design development and final designs, alongside a 200 word statement to summarize the project. Alexandria said, "My idea was to create a design that showed my interpretation of tailoring. I aimed to recreate the 1940s trend known as the 'zoot suit', a suit used mainly in Harlem, New York by African Americans as a way to fight against racial discrimination. I also took references from the 1930s Harlem renaissance period and fused these ideas with inspiration from 1990s hip hop street style to create contemporary designs that represented both my culture and personality."

The judges will look over the entries a final time and all finalists' outfits will be presented at a prestigious awards evening held at Merchant Taylors Hall London where the prize winners and runners up will be announced at the end of this month.
