BA (Hons) Photography student Ben Swanson will be returning to NTU for his final year of study, having recently spent time working in Shanghai with prestigious Nottingham studio, Scene Photography.

He travelled to China with Scene's Owner and Creative Director Rob Smalley, who is also an NTU Photography alumnus, to complete a series of shoots for a Chinese toy company.

There are many benefits to work experience. I enjoy being out in the field, it keeps you well grounded.

On working in a different cultural environment Ben commented: "Photography is photography wherever you go, and I'm very comfortable working with Rob. I was humbled to learn how respected the UK's creative industry really is. Not just photography but everything – there's a big demand."

When asked how he secured his work experience with Scene Photography Ben said: "It was quite simple really. I rang Rob every day for a month. He gave in and now I've been working here for two years."

Ben works assisting Rob and his team on shoots at Scene's Nottingham studio and on location around the UK.

Rob graduated from our BA (Hons) Photography in 2000 and went on to establish Scene Photography in 2001. The business has gone from strength to strength, winning numerous prestigious awards and now counts Speedo, E.On, Vision Express, Sunspel, Temprell and Store Twenty One amongst its clientele.

When asked why he feels it's important to offer work experience, Rob commented: "I think it's really important, particularly where you have a keen student who is motivated; they get to gain experience in the commercial world and earn money to support their students. Ben has experienced the organising and workings of commercial shoots, dealing with clients and the hours and commitment involved in the reality of surviving in a crowded market place. Ben has been a great help to me over the last two years."
