Wednesday 8 January marked the launch of Since 1843: In the making, an exhibition of over 100 selected works from Nottingham Trent University alumni, held across the University's City site. The exhibition marks the start of a year-long celebration of the School of Art & Design's 170th anniversary.

The launch kicked off with music from Georgie Rose and speeches from Vice-Chancellor Professor Neil Gorman, Blur frontman Damon Albarn, and NTU alumnus and actor Paul Kaye. Over 700 guests then explored the exhibition, which spanned across the Newton, Bonington and Arkwright buildings.

Several artists including Jon Burgerman produced artworks for the exhibition, and others, such as Simon Starling and Paul Kaye, will be taking part in talks and discussions offering insights into their work during the month-long show.

The exhibition boasts a diverse range of work, including canvasses by one of the school's earliest local students, Dame Laura Knight, who gained a place in 1890 aged just 13. Other works include sculptural pieces by Richard Trupp and Ruth Claxton, moving image by Jonathan Glazer (best known for his work with Guinness and Stella Artois), and even millinery from Lizzie Lock, and Jenny Roberts, along with many others.

Tim Garratt, Shareholding Director of Innes England and NTU alumnus, commented: "NTU should be congratulated on putting together this show. It was a great event and timely reminder of an eco-system of talented folks we have here."

Pro-Vice-Chancellor Ann Priest said: "This exhibition is an important reminder of the quality and influence of Nottingham's creative output and testament to our community of artists, practitioners and scholars."

The launch was a huge success, showcasing alumni of an extremely high calibre, illustrating the impact of the School of Art & Design on the visual arts and creative industries nationally and internationally.

Since 1843: In the Making will be open to the public until 7 February 2014.
