Nottingham Trent University's canoe slalom team has won the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Championship for the second year running after picking up 11 out of 18 medals up for grabs at the competition.

The seven-man team, including Nottingham Trent University sports scholars and GB canoeists Tom Quinn, Ryan Westley, Zak Franklin and Alice Haining together with James Ibbotson, Matt Footit and Luke Simpson, put in a fantastic performance winning five of the six gold medals available.

In the mixed team event and the men's canoe doubles section, Nottingham Trent University occupied all three podium positions.

James Ibbotson collected the overall trophy on behalf of the Nottingham Trent University team.

He said: "As the overall results were announced in ascending order we all got nervous. We knew we had all put in good results, but weren't sure if it was going to be enough to beat the 30 plus strong team of Newcastle. When it came to the top three places and we still hadn’t been called out, excitement grew in us all. When it was announced that we had narrowly won over Newcastle everyone was extremely happy. We hope to continue our winning streak into next year!"

The canoe slalom championship was held at Tees Barrage International White Water Course last weekend (Feb 15 and 16) and the victory for Nottingham Trent University has earned it more than 150 points towards their overall BUCS league standings.

This year the University hopes to improve even further on its success from last year when it came 17, its highest ever ranking.

Alex Bailey, elite sport development officer at Nottingham Trent University, said: "A huge congratulations should go to all of the team that competed in Teesside this weekend. To achieve so many medals and win the event for the second year running with a team of just seven athletes is a fantastic achievement for which they should be extremely proud."

The results for Nottingham Trent University's canoe slalom team were:

  • Mixed Team – 1, 2 and 3
  • K1M – 3 and 4
  • C1 – 1, 2 and 4
  • C2 – 1, 2 and 3
  • K1W – 1
  • Men's Team – 1 and 5
  • Overall - 1
