Nottingham Trent University (NTU) has been awarded £69,000 to support creative businesses to take their innovative ideas off the drawing board and into the marketplace.

The Fast Forward competition is held by the Intellectual Property Office to encourage universities and public sector research establishments to work collaboratively with businesses and local communities, to maximise the benefits of innovation and intellectual property.

NTU were one of nine winners, with a collaborative project between Nottingham Law School (NLS), the School of Art & Design, and The Hive. Budding entrepreneurs will receive guidance on how to protect, manage and exploit their ideas and intellectual property when dealing with commercial clients.

Our world-class universities are a key driver of innovation and we should always look to find new ways of working with them to support businesses.

Lord Younger, Minister for Intellectual Property

Minister for Intellectual Property, Lord Younger said: "The UK is a nation of inventors, and each year we see cases of successful businesses that have turned their innovative ideas into products and services for the UK and international markets. Our world-class universities are a key driver of this innovation and we should always look to find new ways of working with them to better support businesses and drive economic growth."

The project will be delivered through a series of themed workshops, in which industry experts and IP lawyers are invited to join with Nottingham businesses and students to share their knowledge and experience. Companies and graduates with business ideas, will also be offered the opportunity to benefit from pro bono law clinics, delivered by students of NLS, guided by experienced intellectual property (IP) lawyers.
