Hopes of NTU Women's Rugby Union winning get washed away with the rain

The afternoon of Saturday March 22 saw the Women's Rugby Union teams from both NTU and UoN come face to face at NTU Clifton campus grounds to compete for another crucial point, in order to help increase their chance of winning the 2014 Varsity Series.

The game can definitely be described as a tale of two halves. NTU did a great job in the first half of the fixture, absorbing some strong UoN attacks and managing to score some well worked tries through Holly Hazell and Maddy Lockwood.

In addition to this, the first half of the match was capped off wonderfully by a solo effort from Carys William, who amazingly almost went the whole length of the pitch in a determined effort to score before half time.

The second half of the Varsity fixture presented a very different scenario for those watching. The heavens decided to open and pour down with rain, and alongside heavy winds this became a perfect combination to slow down the NTU ladies in pink. The UoN team were able to better deal with the conditions and found their strength in the second half.

NTU ladies struggled to get out of the half and get any sustained area of pressure going forward, while, as mentioned before, the UoN were able to capitalise on this and power through the weather conditions. The tables had turned and NTU were no longer posing a threat to UoN, they retained their lead through the whole second half of the match and had no intentions to surrender it, leading to a final match score of 34 – 17 to UoN.

Although it was a disappointing final result for NTU, the ladies made a commendable effort and Daniel Edson (Coach for NTU Women's Rugby Union) had the following to say "I am very proud of the efforts and commitment the girls have shown. They have worked immensely hard all season and have had a season which will live long in the memory. Although the final results doesn't maybe show it, we certainly gave UoN a good run for their money. The girls now have one final challenge against the University of Edinburgh in the play-off final later in April and I know this result has only made them more hungry for success in this fixture!"

NTU Sport would like to wish the NTU Women's Rugby Union best of luck for their upcoming matches, and we're still positive we can bring home the Varsity trophy this year!

Final Score: 34 University of Nottingham - 17 Nottingham Trent University
