The LawWorks and Attorney General Student Pro Bono Awards were held at the House of Commons on 1 April 2014. Nottingham Law School was represented by nominees Joy Lewis and Ella Davis. Both students were nominated for the Best Contribution by an Individual Student Award, for their outstanding contributions to the pro bono activities at Nottingham Law School (NLS).

After joining NLS Ella became an accredited FRU (Free Representation Unit) volunteer, undertaking three FRU cases within a few months, whilse studying on the BPTC. Ella displayed an impressive level of engagement in all of her cases and received noteworthy praise from her clients on her attention to detail and her "amazing work ethic". She was also praised for going "the extra mile". Her ability to achieve this in a particularly busy period of the BPTC, while managing other commitments, illustrates her devotion to the cause, making Ella a worthy nominee.

Joy has also made remarkable contributions to the NLS Pro Bono Project since starting the BPTC. In May 2013, Joy single-handedly organised an event to discuss changes to the criminal legal aid system proposed in the government's Transforming Legal Aid consultation. Currently Joy is Lead Investigator of an Innocence Project team, investigating an alleged miscarriage of justice; a difficult case to progress but her focus has been impressive. Joy has also contributed to a proposed change in the way Innocence cases are handled, demonstrating the range of activities where Joy has been involved.

Both nominees have shown commitment and dedication to the pro bono activities available at NLS, dedicating numerous hours to helping others while completing the intense BTPC course. Joy and Ella were both highly commended for their fantastic achievements and are a credit to NLS.
