Four sports scholars at Nottingham Trent University proved their paddling abilities at the weekend to secure places in Great Britain's canoe team.

Ryan Westley and Tom Quinn took first and second places in their slalom selection trials at Lee Valley White Water Centre to gain spots in GB's under 23 single and senior single (C1) canoe squads.

They were joined in the top three by fellow Nottingham Trent University sport scholar Adam Burgess, who gained a place in the Under 23 team. Adam, 21 from Stone, just missed out on a spot in the Senior C1 team due to the pre-qualification of World Champion David Florence. He did however win first place in the two-man senior canoe trial with his partner Greg Pitt to earn his place in the GB C2 squad.

Tom, 23, from York, said: "I've had an awesome training group with Ryan and Adam this winter and we all showed we are really quick. Now I'm hoping to replicate that abroad to see what we can do on the international stage."

Ryan, 20 from Yeovil and 21-year-old Zak Franklin, a fellow Nottingham Trent University scholar from Windsor, finished second in the under 23 two-man and third in the senior two-man canoe races respectively with their partners to also make the GB C2 squads.

James Hayter, Director of Sport and Lifestyle at Nottingham Trent University, said: "The weekend was a fantastic showcase of our scholars' abilities as all athletes put in superb performances to earn their places in the GB Canoe team."

Nottingham Trent University alumnus Richard Hounslow was also in action during the kayak and canoe selection trials and made it his tenth year in the GB team by winning a place in the single kayak (K1) team. He had already pre-qualified for a place in the C2 team with partner and fellow Olympic Silver Medallist David Florence.

The sports scholars are now preparing for a busy summer ahead with the Under 23 European and World Championships and the Senior European and World Championships on the horizon.
