Oliver wins a Furniture Design Guild Mark 2014 award

Alumnus Oliver Hrubiak has won a Furniture Guild Mark Award for his "Finn Lounge Chair" for John Lewis, a design which he developed as a student at Nottingham Trent University.

Alumnus Oliver Hrubiak (BA (Hons) Furniture and Product Design 2012) has won a Furniture Guild Mark Award for his "Finn Lounge Chair" for John Lewis, a design which he developed as a student at Nottingham Trent University.

The Design Guild Mark, now in its seventh year since launching in 2008, rewards excellence in the design of furniture in volume production. By the award of this Guild Mark for designs which meet The Furniture Makers' Company criteria, the designers receive due recognition and the industry is made more aware of the importance of investment in design.

Oliver got off to a flying start when he graduated in 2012. He was awarded the John Lewis Retail Design Award at New Designers, the UK's most important graduate design exhibition, after he impressed them with his Finn Lounge Chair at the exhibition. The award included developing his successful chair for the John Lewis 2013 Autumn / Winter range and being stocked by one of the most established retailers in the UK.

In the same year, Oliver also won first prize for Lighting Designer of the Year at the coveted Lighting Industry Association Student Lighting Design Awards, earning himself the opportunity to exhibit at the Interiors Show at the NEC and £1,500 prize money for his contemporary table lamp, "Frank", a design created for the domestic environment that combines different materials to create distinctive features and a lasting charm.

Graham Jones, Chairman of the Design Guild Mark commented: "This year has been particularly exciting. We have seen a record number of entries that suggests the Design Guild Mark is really gaining awareness and value. Most significantly, we had many first time applicants and, particularly, young applicants, who really expressed a passion for their craft."
