Top Goal Scorer Sam Ward trains the NTU Women's Hockey

On Wednesday 14 May our NTU Women's Hockey first team were fortunate enough to be coached by 'upcoming Hockey star' Sam Ward!

On Wednesday 14 May our NTU Women's Hockey first team were fortunate enough to be coached by Sam Ward - someone who can only be described as an upcoming Hockey superstar.

Sam Ward definitely hit the ground running when he began playing for Nottingham's biggest Hockey club in Beeston. They are not only one of the biggest clubs, but also one of the most successful in the country with both the men's and women's first teams competing in the Hockey League's Premier Division.

Not only did the Beeston Hockey Club compete in the Premier Division, the men's first team were officially crowned Champions of the Season, after winning an extremely intense game against East Grinstead. Sam Ward played strongly and performed an impressive drag flick in the first minute of the game when Beeston were awarded a penalty corner. This gave them an early lead of 1 – 0.

Throughout the matches Sam Ward stood out, and led the scoring for Beeston in the final games by scoring a number of critical goals in the closing part of the season. His efforts were rewarded when he was recognised as top goal scorer for Beeston, and top open play goal scorer in the Premier League.

The achievements of the man who trained our first team on Wednesday 14 May don't just stop there – Sam has recently been training with the England Senior Men's Hockey Team, and is hoping to become fully engrained within the setup where he is to play alongside some amazing NTU Alumni's; Ollie Willars, Adam Dixon and Tim Whiteman.

Adam and Tim have had the honour to be chosen as Part of the England Hockey World Cup team and will travel out to The Hague in the Netherlands to compete – illustrating the great level of talent that Sam Ward will hopefully be playing alongside in the near future, but this time in an England shirt rather than a Beeston one!

After all that has been said, it's clear to say that our women's Hockey team have been privileged to train with such as great talent such as Sam Ward.

Gareth-Weaver Tyler, Performance and Elite Sport Manager at NTU, had the following to say about the training session "To have someone of Sam Ward's experience coaching our ladies first team is a fantastic opportunity for the squad and I am sure they will take a lot away from the session, especially on how to score goals which Sam has become a true master of! It also shows the strength of the thriving partnership between NTU and Beeston HC."
