Postgraduate students at Nottingham Trent University have demonstrated their creative skills during a summer of successful art and design shows in London and Nottingham.

This month, students studying for their Master's degrees in Applied Design exhibited at New Designers in London - the UK's most important exhibition for emerging design - and won the award for Best Stand.

The stand featured work by more than 30 postgraduate students studying MA Fashion, Knitwear, Textile Design Innovation and Contemporary Craft Practice.

The judges said it was a "professional and beautifully presented stand with an outstanding collection of work. All individual designs are unique, yet work cohesively as a collection."

The concept, loosely based on A Midsummer's Night Dream, was devised by the course leader, Katherine Townsend in collaboration with Richard Arm and Joy Buttress from the School of Art & Design.

The same show featured MA Fashion Design alumna Asato Goto, who graduated from Nottingham Trent University in 2012, through the prestigious Paul Smith Scholarship scheme. She was invited back by New Designers as part of 'One Year On' - to exhibit work selected from some of the most promising recent graduates. She travelled from Tokyo to take part in the event where she secured new customers and the chance to exhibit at Esthetica, London Fashion Week in the future.

Nottingham did not miss out on witnessing the skills of the students either. Products from the New Designers exhibition were featured in a fashion event at an MA student-led initiative, Notion Nottingham, at Antenna on 3 July.

Established last year with funding from UnLtd, secured by The Hive, this year's event was coordinated by Knitwear and Textile students, Emily Bradshaw, Cassie Worman and Claire Bradshaw, with MA alumni and Notion Nottingham's creative director, Alexandra Collison.

Dr Katherine Townsend, Principal Lecturer in Fashion, Knitwear and Textiles at Nottingham Trent University, said: "Congratulations must go to this year's Master's students for creating such high quality work and to staff from the School who consistently support them to develop and showcase their practice creatively. Exhibiting in London and Nottingham alongside alumni provides these emerging designers with valuable experience and feedback, enhancing their confidence to approach the industry when they graduate."

Work will also be exhibited during an exhibition of selected postgraduate Art and Design student work in September. Held at the University's City site from 15 September to 3 October, the show will offer a chance to see work by students completing postgraduate degrees in the School of Art & Design and the School of Architecture Design and the Built Environment.
