An international advertising expert who's given talks for major companies across Europe has teamed up with Nottingham Trent University to host an event to inspire profitable business in a changing high street.

Marie Stafford, Foresight Director at JWT London, will be joined by a number of guest speakers at the 'Retail Futures and Trends' event on Thursday 30 October. The evening is a joint collaboration between JWT London, Nottingham Trent University's working with you... and Nottingham City Council's business network 'Indie City'.

JWT London are a communications advertising agency who work with businesses and corporations to 'create pioneering solutions'. Marie has previously spoken at events in Serbia and Slovenia and will be presenting new research in Paris later this year.

Nottingham Trent University's working with you… was set up in August 2013. The £1.9 million funded project, which is part funded by the European Regional Development Fund, works to support the growth, innovation and development of local SMEs in the East Midlands.

The evening will seek to inspire and empower students, academics, local businesses and budding entrepreneurs with the knowledge, ideas and resources to be successful in an ever-changing high street.

Speakers will focus on areas including how to lure shoppers, the role of data in delivering tailored offers, innovative services, merchandising and customer loyalty.

Other speakers include Professor Kim Cassidy, Professor of Services (Retail) Marketing at Nottingham Business School and Alan Morris, Executive Chairman at IT retail support company, Retail Assist.

In the final talk of the evening, local comic book store co-owner Jonathan Rigby will share how his business - 'Page45' - has used its online presence to continue to strengthen customer loyalty while replicating the in-store experience.

Marie Stafford, Foresight Director at JWT London, said: "It's fantastic to support the development of small and medium businesses. Recognising the evolving dynamics of the high street is important to the strengthening of consumer trade, particularly through the use of online and mobile technologies. I'm looking forward to networking with Nottingham's businesses and building ideas for the future."

Councillor Nick McDonald, Portfolio Holder for Jobs and Growth at Nottingham City Council, said: "Here in Nottingham we fully appreciate the importance to our retail and leisure offer of having a diverse and unique selection of retail outlets and leisure venues – it's what sets us apart.

"The vibrancy of our independent retailers is well noted and we hope that this series of free events will enable the people behind them to connect with each other and access new ideas that can help their businesses to develop further."

Lynn Oxborrow, Academic lead at Nottingham Trent University's working with you…, said: "We're looking forward to welcoming JWT London and a great line-up of speakers with valuable insight into the high street world.

"We hope that the event will inspire businesses and budding entrepreneurs to expand their ideas, adopt new practices and technologies, and help the economy grow."

The event is free of charge. Advanced booking is essential. Sign up and view more information about the event.
