Fashion Accessory Design students receive £2,000 Leathersellers' Grant

The Leathersellers' Company Charitable Fund has awarded £2,000 to this year's BA (Hons) Fashion Accessory Design students for their innovative response to the Enterprise Initiative for Student Funds project.

The aim of the student project is to develop enterprise initiatives and fundraising. Students are challenged to design and make products to sell in order to raise funds, which in turn are used by final-year Fashion Accessory Design students to buy portfolios, materials, cover travel expenses, support research and help with their final-year collections.

The £2,000 award will be put towards a laser cutting machine for jewellery manufacture and a 3D printer for the students to use to help them manufacture products to sell and raise funds.

Recently, students on the course recycled the large visual display wall from the 2014 NTU stand at Graduate Fashion Week. The vibrant images, printed on a canvas fabric backdrop, were transformed into canvas bags which they sold to staff and students to raise funds. Second year students have also made satchels and have approached the Bonington shop with a view to selling them in the future. All the products made and sold are accessory based and students not only raise money but gain valuable business skills.

Fashion Accessory Design Course Leader, Lee Mattocks said: "All students participate in fundraising initiatives and they are assessed at Year One and Two with the end goal of having a financially supported final year of study. This award will go towards providing valuable equipment to support the students in achieving this goal."
