The Institute of Directors (IoD) East Midlands Region has named Garry Smith, Commercial Director of Nottingham Trent University, as its new chairman.

Mr Smith is a fellow of the IoD and a chartered director. His career has spanned the commercial, blue chip and public sectors, as well as running his own company, but development of the Higher Education sector has become a specialism. He will also represent the East Midlands on the IoD's National Council.

Ron Lynch, regional director of the IoD, said: "I'm very pleased that Garry has agreed to become the IoD's regional chairman as he brings a wealth of senior business expertise and achievements across several important sectors. He is a firm believer in the need for strong business ethics, excellent corporate governance and the development of business leaders."

Mr Smith, who also sits on the board of local television channel Notts TV and is vice-chairman of the IoD's Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Committee, takes over from Peter Fothergill as regional chairman. Peter, a senior and respected business figure in the healthcare industry, had served two terms as regional chairman.

Commenting on his new role, Mr Smith said: "It is a real privilege to represent the Institute of Directors in the East Midlands. These are exciting times as the IoD develops a new strategy and promising times for the business community. The region has an important part to play in the success of the national economy and I will champion this during my term of office.

"Our Royal Charter requires us to develop the expertise of our current and future leaders for the benefit of society. Through my role at Nottingham Trent University I was instrumental in establishing a working partnership with the IoD that gave rise to the original pilot of the IoD student membership scheme which has been adopted nationally with great success.

"This scheme allows businesses to support and provide opportunities for the talent of the future and provides an effective bridge to work for students."
