Talent Resource Director, Andie Whitfield, from international fashion retailer ANN INC., parent company of the iconic brands Ann Taylor and LOFT, visited NTU this week looking to recruit a textiles student for a year-long internship in New York.

The internship opportunity was opened to all final-year BA (Hons) Textile Design and BA (Hons) Fashion Knitwear and Knitted Textile Design students, who were invited to a presentation by the company representative on 11 November. The company is specifically looking for final-year students in the areas of embroidery, knit, wovens and textiles for 2015. The students were asked to submit a CV, from which 12 students were selected to attend an in person interview where they could each present their work to the panel.

Presenting and interviewing alongside Andie was last year's ANN INC. intern from NTU, Jessica Wong (BA (Hons) Textile Design 2013). Jessica gave an interesting insight into her experience as an embroidery specialist working within the LOFT brand. She said: "Although I was placed within the woven tops and accessories department initially, I actually got to work with all the departments to create embellishments. It was a great opportunity to see different areas of design and identify my own strengths."

A number of pieces featuring Jessica's embellishments are now available to buy in the US and online. She said: "It's a great feeling to see something you have worked on out there and available to the client."

The internship, based in the ANN INC. home office in Times Square, New York, is a fantastic opportunity for students directly following graduation, and continues to strengthen NTU's partnership with the company. The interns are paid and most of the Visa expenses are covered by ANN INC.

Currently undertaking the internship is 2014 Textile Design graduate Lynn Aldred, who is a woven textile specialist, and is now entering her second month with the company. Andie said: "Lynn and Jessica are great examples of how young talent can make a huge impact within an organization. These internships offer a rewarding experience for not only the intern but for our teams, as they contribute new ideas and bring a fresh perspective to the creative process."

By early December 2014, ANN INC. will confirm the successful applicants who are through to the next stage of the selection process, which will then consist of a short project with a deadline in February 2015.

Final decisions will be confirmed by Easter 2015. Watch this space!
