A graphic design student from Nottingham Trent University has won an international competition for her animated portrayal of Sir Winston Churchill.

The annual Winston Churchill Design Competition, held in partnership with The Churchill Centre UK and ARTS THREAD, is aimed at BA/MA design students and recent graduates and seeks to uncover unique, emerging talent. This year's competition was open to an international audience, with judges welcoming entries from around the world.

Last night (4 November), Nottingham Trent University Graphic Design student Olivia Wojcik was invited to exhibit her piece at the annual Sir Winston Churchill Dinner 2014 in London. It was attended by guests including actors Robert Hardy and Julian Fellowes, and the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, as well as two other competition finalists.

As part of the evening's proceedings, Johnson and Allen Packwood, Director at the Churchill Archives Centre, presented prizes to the three finalists and announced Olivia as the winner for her animation telling the story of Churchill's life and his many achievements.

In second place was Emily May from Falmouth University, for her scarf design inspired by Churchill's letters which speak of his love of nature and the important relationships in his life. In third place was Paul Firth from Buckinghamshire New University for his graphic cards depicting the different facets of Churchill's personality.

Katie Greenyer, Creative Director at Pentland Brands said: "The brief for this year's competition was to capture the essence of Churchill's unique style and personality, and present it for a modern audience. We were all so impressed by the research and unique interpretations of the brief shown by the three finalists this year but Olivia's piece really stood out for its skill, execution and creativity."

Olivia has won a cash prize and a paid work placement at Pentland Brands.
