The Emergency Services Research Unit (ESRU) in the School of Social Sciences was delighted to be approached by telecommunications company Telefonica O2, who wished to sponsor an award at their biennial Emergency Services Conference.

The Telefonica O2 Award is to be given for 'The Best Emergency Services Practitioner Communications Paper' at the conference. This fits very well with the conference's long-standing aim to provide a space where practitioners and academics can learn from one another.

The broad scope of the conference aims to appeal to researchers and practitioners engaged across a wide spectrum of emergency service activities. We encourage academics, members of the emergency services, emergency planners and disaster managers, risk managers and those working in community safety and recovery, to come together to discuss research processes and findings.

ESRU was delighted that the Conference Award panel chose Steve Chu's paper, 'Using Behavioural Insight To Save Lives', as the recipient of the very first Telefonica O2 Award.

Steve Chu works for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service as their Head of Strategy and Engagement, a role that covers performance, data analysis, research and intelligence, and all aspects of communication, customer services, consultation and engagement.

Steve's paper dealt with how the targeting and wording of communications about fire safety in the home, might encourage people to take fire safety actions. The research found that simple techniques, such as personalising communications and being polite rather than directive, increased public responses and interest in home fire safety messages.

Steve will now be able to call upon Telefonica O2's expertise in digital communications through a free consultancy session with an O2 specialist. ESRU is delighted that the Emergency Services Conference is now attracting such high profile support.
