Stories in the Dark is Surface Gallery's fourth series of exhibitions in collaboration with our BA (Hons) Fine Art course, and succeeds last year's The Collective Individual.

Made up of four week-long exhibitions (Lost in the Gloss, Scraping the Bottom of the Bargain Bucket, The World is Round and Khepri), Stories in the Dark has seen the students using a critical or reflective approach to group exhibitions in response to the festival's theme.

Senior Lecturer in Fine Art, Ben Judd commented: "This long-running and fruitful collaboration between NTU Fine Art and Surface Gallery offers undergraduate students the invaluable opportunity to curate an exhibition within a professional and supportive environment. For this series of four week-long exhibitions, the students have curated a series of successful and dynamic group shows that employ and examine concepts such as storytelling and the power of the imagination."

Fine Art student, Matthew Collins told us: "Exhibiting outside the University is important for us in providing a point of focus for our work. The course has great connections to art spaces throughout the city and really nurtures an interest in making space for ambitious, distinctive work within Nottingham. Opportunities such as these help us to develop within a wider network of artists and galleries in the city."

Fine Art student, Antony Fletcher, who produced work for the Khepri exhibition added: "In responding to the Stories in the Dark theme, we decided to look at the Egyptian legend of the god, Khepri. The experience of producing work for an event outside of the University has been an honour and a very exciting challenge. We have learned to work to a tight deadline and stage a significant show with what was a very large audience. It has been a fantastic opportunity!"
