Live project pulls Architecture students together

BSc (Hons) Architectural Technology and BA (Hons) Interior Architecture and Design students recently worked together on a project to rejuvenate one of Nottingham's old lace factories, Cobden Place.

The project brief outlined how the space must be functional while including a creative design to suit an office environment. There was also specific requests from the client on maximising the use of recycled materials and minimising waste. As the building has been derelict for 30 years, important structural considerations were necessary to ensure the build was also safe. Therefore the need of both creative design and structural integrity brought the students from both courses to collaborate on the job.

BSc (Hons) Architectural Technology student Laurence White said afterwards, "We ended up doing a site analysis to check for defects of which there were a couple. The back wall was damp and the floors were eroding. We decided to fix these by redesigning the area with new installations. We also looked into the possibility and plausibility of including a new roof light after working alongside the interior students."

The student work was displayed, giving the clients and opportunity to view the plans and speak to the teams. When describing the work, the project clients Liam Woodgates and Becky Evers explained, "There's a number that stand out. They have obviously taken the brief and managed to fit everything into the place which is a tall order when you have to incorporate design as well. They have taken on a lot of the things we have said about reclaiming materials and about how to keep the project sustainable by keeping as much space as possible, available. They have done a great job which is fantastic to see."
