Students from our BA (Hons) Textile Design course have recently taken part in a week-long live industry project set by the UK's largest made-to-measure blinds manufacturer, Hillarys.

The brief from Hillarys asked the students to work in teams to create a collection of lace roller fabrics.

Taking inspiration from NTU's Lace Archive the students created two designs, across a variety of mediums such as embroidery, woven / jacquard, burnout and print.

They then had to document the history of Nottingham lace, and how it had helped them to produce their designs, and consider pricing and market competition. Finally, the students created samples, and chose their best four to make a collection, which they presented to a judging panel from Hillarys.

The winning team included three students who are specialsing in print; Emma Ferguson, Sophie Wade and Freyja Boycott-Garnett. They will have their designs included in Hillarys' roller samples for two years, and will spend a week on placement at Hillarys' head office in Nottingham.

Emma told us: "I really enjoyed this brief as it was really interesting to collaborate with other students on the course and see how others work. It was challenging, but enjoyable trying to make our work commercial for a large company.

"Being selected as the winning team has definitely boosted my confidence. It's great to know that a large company such as Hillarys like my work, and potentially want to use it in their catalogues. I feel that live projects are essential as they allow you to see how the industry works, while getting feedback from industry professionals which gives you a real insight into the textiles business."
