NBS Visits Burgundy School of Business, Dijon, France

Students on the BA (Hons) Business Management and Entrepreneurship course paid a visit to Burgundy School of Business

At Nottingham Business School there is an increasing opportunity to study abroad with our partner institutions, who offer a range of short courses. One of the partnering institutions, Burgundy School of Business, accommodated twenty NBS students and staff for a fortnight for a series of workshops and company visits within Dijon, France.

The students were a mix of second and final years, on both the full-time and sandwich routes of BA (Hons) Business Management and Entrepreneurship course, as well as students from Curtin and University of Western Australia (both in Perth). These students were split into two groups for the modules Entrepreneurial Awareness and M.I.M.E simulation. This gave them the opportunity to express their creativity, as well as interacting with students from another country. The activities involved were clay modelling, storytelling and life-size portraits.

This was something very different for students looking to tap their creativity for ideas. The workshop allowed them to explore different forms of communication and team working skills. Although some found that they were out of their comfort zone, it was a really useful experience that helped them develop. Finally, a reflective diary was a requirement to ensure the students received the maximum benefit from the exercise, as well as an opportunity to reflect on their experience.

The M.I.M.E workshop is a unique concept that was developed around 15 years ago, with approximately 10,000 people taking part since it began. It uses simple techniques (Lego pieces represent the raw materials, plant and equipment of a company) to teach business principles.

During the second week, a module on innovation incorporating three company visits were taken, as well as some free time with a visit to Beaune and a tutored wine tasting afternoon. This gave the students a different perspective to entrepreneurship with a view to unlocking a creative, free thinking approach to business that will prepare them for post-study life.
