NTU celebrates its Bronze Boarder

NTU Sport are celebrating our first BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) snowsports medal in nearly eight years after one of our students slid her way to the podium of the British University Indoor Series.

Nathalie Hörning, a 21-year-old Equestrian Psychology student, already had an eye on the finals when she set out for the regional rounds on 4 March.

The competition, which consists of four regional heats culminating in a national final, was held this year at Castleford Xscape in Yorkshire. The venue is one of the country's largest indoor ski slopes and regularly attracts university teams who can practice without having to leave the country.

The annual Series, which takes place in the build up to the prestigious BUCS Alpine Competition, features a range of events including ski racing, snowboard racing, ski and snowboard dual slaloms and freestyle.

In the regional rounds Nathalie swept her way through the competition with ease. Her impressive runs qualified her for the Women's Snowboard Freestyle final and the Women's Snowboard Slalom final.

Only a week later Nathalie was back at Castleford and ready to go for gold in both categories. She battled hard, competing against girls from all over the UK.

In the freestyle competition Nathalie narrowly missed out, finishing sixth in the table. This did not hold her back, however, as she went on to bag the bronze in the slalom with a time of 19.25, less than three seconds behind the winner.

Nathalie's experience of the day was nothing but positive. "Competing was an awesome experience. I'm stoked to have won the bronze medal having to ride against some very skilled snowboarders. The support I got from spectators and fellow competitors was amazing and really helped me loosen up and focus before the race," she said.

NTU would like to congratulate Nathalie on her great success and wish her the best of luck for any future competitions.

As one of the largest clubs here at NTU, Snowsports are beginning to make their mark on the UK competition scene and with results like Nathalie's we're excited to see what the future has in store for them.
