Our BA (Hons) Graphic Design students will be heading off to New York for a five day study trip at the end of the month.

The optional trip is open to students across all three years of the course, and will give them the chance to experience a different culture and soak up influences from the American design market. As a result, they will be able to identify the key differences in working in the UK compared with the USA.

The students will visit a number of studios, including Pentagram, the Society of Illustrators and KarlssonWilker, and have the opportunity to see working agencies and speak to designers. There will also be time for the students to explore the city, visiting sights like the Empire State Building, Times Square, and Grand Central Station.

First Year student, Tessa Bridge told us: "New York is such an iconic place to visit and it is buzzing with different cultures. I think I'll get an insight into how other graphic designers think and work around problems. The opportunity to chat to creative teams during the various studio visits will be very beneficial in gathering a broader understanding of the industry. Overall I am most looking forward to these studio visits but also just exploring what the Big Apple has to offer in general."

Final Year student, William Warr added: "I'm looking forward to experiencing the big city with a group of course mates. One of the studios I am visiting specialises in working with cities and design for them. This is an area I'm really interested in and I've already got a list of questions for them. It will be a brilliant insight and I'm looking forward to learning a lot. Study trips abroad are an important aspect of your university experience as all countries have different ways of approaching design. Since America is a key player in the field of design it will be extremely beneficial to learn how things are done across the pond."
