Super student support for Fairtrade Fortnight

NTU students and staff turned out in force to help celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight.

NTU students and staff turned out in force to help celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight. People joined in activities and ran their own events to raise awareness of the Fairtrade Foundation and the Fairtrade products available both at NTU and beyond.

A whole week's worth of events took place from the 2 - 6 March including NTU's Fairtrade Cupcake Bake Off.  Both students and staff took part in this event, which asked contestants to bake cupcakes using as many Fairtrade ingredients as possible. Cupcakes made ranged from chocolate, to strawberry shortbread and Jaffa Cake! All of the cakes tasted fantastic and the star bakers won some lovely Fairtrade goodies for their efforts.

Tea and cake

The cakes were given away during Fairtrade Afternoon Tea events held in the Global Lounge, with donations raising money for local food banks across Nottingham. Over 100 students came along to the Afternoon Tea, where they were able to try a range of different Fairtrade teas available at NTU's catering outlets and local shops. NTU's catering team helped us celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight by offering free tasters of 'Oh So Scrummy' Fairtrade snacks in Dine Eliot and Dine Arkwright.

Local stallholders braved the cold weather to share their locally produced, ethical and Fairtrade wares with lots of yummy products available to try and buy. The market has been such a success that we plan to hold it on a regular basis. Look out for details of the next market day in the coming weeks.

With the support of NTSU, a group of students visited Edwalton Primary School to teach Year 5 and 6 pupils about the importance of Fairtrade, getting them to think about the fairness of the global supply chain for some of the most common foods we buy - chocolate and bananas. This was great experience for our volunteers and something positive to add to their CVs.

Thank you

NTU is proud to be a Fairtrade University, an award that we couldn't achieve without the support and involvement of our staff and students. A huge thank you goes out to all those people who ran their own events throughout the week including the IS department's Faitrade Fair and The School of Science and Technology's bake sale that raised a fantastic £60 for the Fairtrade Foundation.
