John Lewis prize for Architectural Design student

Final year BA (Hons) Interior Architecture and Design student Victoria Blizzard recently won the Student Awards competition as part of the Retail Design Expo 2015 set by John Lewis.

Final year BA (Hons) Interior Architecture and Design student Victoria Blizzard recently won the Student Awards competition as part of the Retail Design Expo 2015. The brief, set by John Lewis and Dalziel + Pow, challenged students to design a new layout for the flagship John Lewis on Oxford Street.

The challenge was to design a new retail experience for technology at John Lewis, building on the brand's strength in the sector. The concepts had to excite the tech-savvy and reassure the technophobe whilst remaining unique and on brand.

Students had to consider aspects such as the product breakdown, product density, multichannel shopping and the brand power.

The whole final year of BA (Hons) Interior Architecture Design took part in the brief, with selected students going on have their work reviewed by Dalziel + Pow and John Lewis. Three students from that group went on to present at the Retail Design Expo in London Olympia. The work was judged by a select committee of industry experts, with Victoria's designs chosen as the winner.

"I was really surprised to be honest!" Victoria said afterwards. "After seeing the strength of work from the other universities taking part I was really impressed. It was a great competition to win."

"A lot of the work on the course has been quite conceptual, so being able to work on a live project like this that had the client coming in to speak to us was really good. It also used a lot of the skills I learnt on placement, which was really positive."

Victoria's prize includes a paid placement for six weeks with Dalziel + Pow and the John Lewis Design Department in London.
