A major delegation from the Centre for Business and Insolvency Law recently attended the INSOL International Academics' Group in San Francisco, held at the Fairmont Hotel on 21 and 22 March 2015. In attendance were Professors David Burdette, Paul Omar and Adrian Walters as well as doctoral candidates Jenny Gant and Wendy Akpareva. The event attracted some 60 delegates from across the world, including featured researchers specialising in international and comparative insolvency as well as practitioners and representatives of the banking industry.

All members of the delegation gave presentations at the conference: on the first day, Professor Walters, currently in residence at the IIT Chicago-Kent School of Law, offered a comparative paper on how foreign restructuring plans were dealt with in the UK and US. This was followed by Wendy Akpareva's contribution on whether the regime for disqualifying directors in the UK could be successfully exported to North America. The second day's session featured Jenny Gant's views on the influence of social policy on the design of insolvency laws in the US and the EU following the global financial crisis. Professor Burdette's talk, during the Research Forum session, outlined a new global research project into insolvency practitioner regulation that will be carried out by a consortium of four centres, based at universities around the world, including the Centre for Business and Insolvency Law. Finally, Professor Omar ended the day with a light-hearted look at judicial cooperation in light of recent jurisprudence from the Caribbean.

Also during the academic conference, Jenny Gant was introduced as the inaugural winner of the Ian Strang Award, an annual prize offered by INSOL International by means of an essay competition on an area of research of topical interest connected to the development of international insolvency law. Jenny was presented with her prize at a Gala Dinner, held during the INSOL International main conference, which followed on after the academic event.

While in San Francisco, the Centre for Business and Insolvency Law team were proud to present Professor Ian Fletcher of University College London, and outgoing Chair of the INSOL International Academic's Group, with a bound copy of a special edition of the Nottingham Insolvency and Business Law e-Journal. This edition features a collection of 21 articles intended as a Festschrift to mark Professor Fletcher's unique contribution to the advancement of the field of international insolvency law. The articles come from all across the world and represent the views of eminent members of academia, the judiciary and practice. It is anticipated that the Festschrift will also be published, together with further tributes, by a major publishing house.
