Nottingham Trent University receives national recognition for its employee volunteering scheme

Nottingham Trent University has received national recognition for its Employee Volunteering and Community Involvement Scheme after gaining an Investing in Volunteers for Employers (IiVE) Award.

Nottingham Trent University has received national recognition for its Employee Volunteering and Community Involvement Scheme after gaining an Investing in Volunteers for Employers (IiVE) Award.

The scheme has been run by the volunteering team of the University's Schools, Colleges and Community Outreach department (SCCO) since 2005. It actively encourages employees to take part in volunteering opportunities, enabling them to engage with the local community for the benefit of the University, the community and the staff involved.

The IiVE Award recognises an organisation's commitment to best practice in employee volunteering management by supporting its employees to volunteer.

Nottingham Trent University's Volunteering Manager, Andy Coppins, said: "We are delighted to have been awarded the Investors in Volunteers for Employers accreditation as it recognises the good practice we deliver in our Employee Volunteering scheme.

"This is the tenth academic year the University has been running this scheme and this accreditation demonstrates the scheme's effectiveness. It also rewards all of the hard work of the staff volunteers and our partner organisations who have participated in the last ten years."

Professor Edward Peck, Vice-Chancellor, Nottingham Trent University, added: "Our Employee Supported Volunteering scheme is something we are strongly committed to and extremely proud of. Not only does it bring great benefits to the University and its staff in terms of enhanced skills and the enriching of roles, it contributes immensely to the voluntary and community organisations with which we work, bringing the University closer to the people and immediate concerns of the local region and its economy."

Staff are able to get involved in a wide range of opportunities from becoming a community volunteer to individual volunteering at local schools. Projects include Right to Read, which helps to improve children's reading abilities; Care for Kids Breakfast Clubs, to provide children with a healthy breakfast and Number Partners, which supports pupils to improve their number skills. Alternatively staff can become a school Governor or charity trustee or engage in team challenges as either a leader or member.

In the academic year 2013/14, 472 Nottingham Trent University staff were involved in an Employee Supported Volunteer scheme, contributing over 4,500 hours to the local community. Team challenges saw the biggest growth and increased impact in this period with 34 separate challenges taking place.

Team challenges included a team of 30 volunteers carrying out conservation work at the Beeston Sidings nature reserve for the Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust. Chris Kennedy, Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust, said: "The team worked exceptionally well, harder than any other team I have had working for us. The nature reserve has a completely different feel to it and more people are now visiting the site thanks to all the hard work."
