CIPFA CEO Rob Whiteman visits Nottingham Business School

CIPFA CEO Rob Whiteman visited NBS as part of our Business Leader Lecture Series for a talk on the fiscal challenges that faced the new parliament.

Nottingham Business School was delighted to welcome CIPFA CEO, Rob Whiteman on Wednesday 29 April as part of the School's Business Leader Lecture Series that runs throughout the academic year.

An accountant by profession, Mr Whiteman has held chief executive positions at the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, the IDeA, and the UK Border Agency (UKBA). Working across Whitehall, he supported policy discussions between the new coalition Government and local Government.

Mr Whiteman is a well-known commentator and writer on public service reform, and with the UK's public finances in an unprecedented position and a general election looming, the financial challenges for the next parliament were presented and discussed with an audience which included chief executive officers and finance directors of a number of East Midlands councils and local public service organisations.

Martin Jones, Programme Leader for the full-time MBA and CIPFA programmes said: "It was great that so many people from across the public sector in the region attended the event and contributed to the discussion. The problems facing the sector in the next parliament will not be easy to solve, but I think Rob has managed to put many of them in context, which will help with starting the process of addressing them".

With the general election coming up, topics surrounding Government are of particular interest and this was no different. The NHS, the welfare state, taxation and devolution were among the significant policy issues that were addressed in relation to the 2015-2020 parliament.
