Alumna Sofie Holdsworth (BA Hons Fashion Communication and Promotion 2012) is creating timeless watch designs at her Nottingham-based business Buckle and Cog.

Sofie is bringing customised watch straps back into trend that can be switched and swapped with different faces to create your own unique accessory to match your outfit. The straps are currently made from Liberty of London printed fabrics as well as prints designed by up-and-coming designers.

Sofie launches three unique collections every season, each featuring five colourful designs. Customers can also send in their own fabrics which can be made into a strap.

Sofie received a grant through NTU and decided she wanted to be self-employed, but just needed an idea. She immersed herself in current trends and did some research and found out how unique watch straps can be. She said: "I got feedback from my friends and gave them all free watches to test out the idea. I found out that there was a demand. The straps are all made from fabric which makes them a bit different to ones on the high street, as well as being extra comfortable.

"I find people buy more than one. They're perfect for presents as people can buy you a new face or strap and you can build up a collection."

The business has gained such popularity she was contacted by Vogue in January and Buckle and Cog was featured in their March edition. Sofie said: “It was overwhelming and from that came lots of orders. I've been buying the magazine since I was 16, it was always a dream."

Sofie has now been running the business for a year and hand-stitches the straps from her kitchen table at home. She said: "It's important to me that as much as possible is made here in Nottingham. I really do believe in keeping things local and I'd eventually like to open offices in the city, where I'll employ apprentices. I'm participating in a trade show in September and I'm currently designing all 30 pieces of fabric from scratch. It's a dream come true.”

The colourful watch straps are available online through sites including Not On The High Street and Etsy, as well as boutiques in Oxford, Brighton and Nottingham.

Prices range from £30 for a whole watch including the face, to £12 for an additional printed strap. Follow Sofie on Facebook.
