A student from Nottingham Trent University has won a national award for her original and extravagant seven-foot high opera costume design.

Eve Kann, 26, who is studying BA (Hons) Costume Design and Making at the School of Art & Design, was awarded the Hainsworth Statement Award at New Designers.

The award is given in recognition of outstanding creativity and originality for textile development and finish.

Eve's work - based on Queen Herodius from the opera Salome – was praised by judges for its "creativity of fabric use and scale of product".

Eve, originally from Broomhill in Sheffield, said she felt proud to win the award and praised her "inspirational" course tutors. "The whole course has been fantastic and I've enjoyed it so much," said Eve.

"The tutors have been inspirational and the level of skills and experience available to us has been amazing. I've learnt so much and it's been so satisfying to learn how to make my designs. When I finally stepped back and looked at the finished piece I felt really proud."

AW Hainsworth is a long established textile company, internationally renowned for manufacturing woollen fabrics, and integrating the traditional qualities of craftsmanship with cutting edge innovation. Eve won the Awards Prize of £1,000 to support the development of design and production going forward.

Meanwhile, BA (Hons) Decorative Arts student Katie Alderson was highly commended at New Designers by the Contemporary Glass Association for her Ideology Workshop collection, which is based on links with signs of the zodiac and the characteristics of each sign.

And MA Fashion Knitwear Design student Gilles Werbrouck was selected to exhibit at TexPrint later this month as a result of his work on the University's stand at New Designers.
