The UnLtd/HEFCE Social Entrepreneurship Champion of the Year 2015 Award has been won by Nottingham Trent University's Enterprise Adviser, Sean Macaskill, at a ceremony in London.

The category was open to universities and social ventures. It was the only award to recognise individual contribution to the sector and the winner was chosen by an external panel that included representatives from University Alliance, Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) along with social entrepreneurs.

Sean is based here in The Hive, Nottingham Trent University's centre for entrepreneurship and enterprise. Between 2012-2015, Sean's support and guidance has helped 62 social enterprise activities; funded 27 projects and potential ventures, created 25 new start-up social ventures and six spin-out businesses. These include Cavology Ltd, which is the university's first ever permanent city centre retail incubator / brand and is a first for any UK university.

Sean said: "It is extremely rewarding to win this award as it acknowledges the work I have done at the university to support social entrepreneurs among our students, graduates and staff.

"My work embeds social entrepreneurship, in particular creating university social enterprise spin-outs which create embedded learning and multiple placement opportunities and are a vehicle for applied academic knowledge."

Professor Eunice Simmons, Pro Vice-Chancellor Academic, Nottingham Trent University, added: "Sean's success in these awards is a tremendous and well-deserved win for him. It demonstrates the University's commitment to social entrepreneurship and to working in partnership with local public and private sector organisations.

"Sean has linked two of the main strategic objectives of his role at the University - social ventures and embedding entrepreneurship into degree content - into an original solution of creating a social venture linked to specific areas of university academia."

Other projects supported by Sean include working with Nottingham City Council on a day care centre for young adults with profound learning difficulties as well as working closely with Nottingham's Creative Quarter, HMP Whatton, D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership, Nottinghamshire County Council and numerous education and health care providers.
