Nottingham Trent University held a project Showcase in September to celebrate the achievements of their flagship small business support projects – Future Factory and Working with You…

The projects have collectively engaged some 1,400 clients, working closely with 480 small firms and entrepreneurs in the East Midlands. Together the projects have invested more than £6.2 million in supporting small and medium businesses and entrepreneurs, helped by grants totalling £2.55 million, including funds from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

Support has included helping firms to design and test new products, adopt social media and improve their marketing, adopt more sustainable practices and experiment with 3D printing and virtual reality.

A key area of success has been helping small businesses access talented NTU graduates. Around 460 graduates have been placed through the projects with 93 permanent jobs created.

Project leader Dr Lynn Oxborrow, said: "I am proud of what the project has achieved. "A lot of people tell us that they wouldn't be able to do some of the things they have without our help."

The Celebration Showcase, held in NTU's historic Old Museum, highlighted some of the projects' successes. Such as Gill Wilson, of Derbyshire-based Paper Works. Gill has been helped by the project to develop a 3D printer which can print designs made out of paper pulp. She said: "It's a great project, they have been very supportive. It will mean that I will be able to innovate and work much quicker."
